Nothing like Memory

The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper: A Book Review

Genre: Historical Fiction; Classic

I was first introduced to The Last of the Mohicans when I was in 7th grade American History… so quite a long time ago. There have been many movies and abridged chapter books inspired by the story and when learning about the French and Indian War (or the 7 year War) we both watched one movie adaptation and read one of the abridged chapter books. I was thrilled. I loved the stories shown through both and so when browsing Barnes&Noble, I slightly freaked out catching a glimpse.

Unfortunately, the original work was nothing compared to what I hoped it to be. Cooper tended to give huge amounts of space to future happenings in the story itself. There are characters that are based on real historical figures and to these he goes in depth on how they do actually die or what becomes of them. The book does not do the Mohicans the full justice that they deserve. They are the most noble natives, but compared to the rest of the native, I don’t think that can be seen as a feat.

Sadly, this is one piece that I would not recommend unless you have an intense background in the time period. Those looking for an enjoyable read without need for anylsis would find this work to tedious to follow.
