A Bloody Mess

The Carolina Variant by Brooke L. French: A Book Review

Genre: Thriller

French writes an intriguing sequel to her debut Inhuman Acts in her new novel The Carolina Variant. Focusing around the story of Tess, a struggling lawyer, a renown CDC doctor, and a pilot, French tells a story close to what could only be described as a zombie apocalypse with the disease being entirely possible.

I do wish that French would have visibly brought in characters from Inhuman Acts, but all in all, The Carolina Variant was quite the read. Tess was a complex character and the chemistry between her and the pilot was very organic. My favorite character by far, though, was Mara. Being put in charge and having to deal with not only the stress of the outbreak, but the idiots who thought she couldn’t handle the job, Mara was badass enough to allow them to know that she knew what she was doing without having to compromise her feminality. It was especially nice that French showed the doctor’s vulnerability in the job as well as in her personal life. It made Mara so much more real.

I hope that in the next book, Mara and Letty meet and work together. I also hope that we learn about the jellyfish from the first book. Everything else, I am just completely confused about.

Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):

Fans of thrillers, zombie apocalypses, and medical fiction would enjoy this work the best. Do not read if the thought of blood or R rating activities are not for you.
