Take Me Back

The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas: A Book Review

Genre: Romance

Armas writes an amazing fake dating trope surrounding two coworkers. With the one needing a date for a Spanish wedding, specifically a boyfriend, and the other having his own reasons for the charade, the two MCs turn into the most of unlikely of couples. Whether by chance or by deliberation, each is exactly what the other needs. She with her family and bubbly personality. He with his need to organize, protect, and double check everything.

The annoying part comes from the fact that the one doesn’t believe that what is going on/ what she is feeling and he is showing is real. However, I would say – the character’s backstory does support this reaction and denial. Broken before, she is hesitant to trust someone, especially a guy, so completely resulting in her second guessing everything as well as wobbling in her conviction as she tries to protect herself.

I will say that I particularly enjoyed the fact that Armas added sexism into the story in little subtle ways. From the woman getting forced to plan an event “because its just like a party” to the mention that a woman only wants to be with someone to get something out of it, Armas doesn’t hold back.

All in all, I am super sad that I finished. I would have loved to stay in that world for a while longer.
