Book Lovers by Emily Henry: A Book Review
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Henry writes a rom-com lover’s perfect dream in her piece Book Lovers. Taking a reader’s love for books and the hopeless romantics of the world, Henry puts together this romantic comedy centered around two major people in the publishing business. Breaking the 4th wall in its satire even, Book Lovers is filled with laughs from beginning to end. Telling the story of Nora, Book Lovers follows her trip with her sister – where some major life-changing events unfold between the two of them.
Following the line from any self-respecting romance comedy, Nora finds herself between two men, drawn towatds one, only to push him away again and again. Honestly, in most regards, the book is quite predictable. Woman and man meet and have awful first encounter. Woman leaves area for work/family, runs into man. 1 year later and they are planning a wedding. Same old, same old.
What makes Henry’s work different – and why I found myself laughing and progressing forward – is the break in the 4th wall she gives Nora. In essence, Nora is making fun of the situation – making fun of the cliché romance novels. She realizes the difference between herself and the heroines in storybooks – and while it hurts, she knows she’s okay with where she is at in life.
Still, you’ll never guess how it ends.
