Inhuman Acts by Brooke L. French: A Book Review
Genre: Thriller
French hits every thriller mark in her debut novel, Inhuman Acts. Surrounding the story of Letty, readers are able to see a woman’s world crash around her even as she fights to remain upright – but that’s not all – something is going on with the world and Letty needs to figure out why. Honestly, Letty is a pretty good character all around. She, as well as all the other characters, is portrayed as human – flaws and all – instead of some seemingly know-it-all robotic clone created in the future which was nice. Her big bad was slightly idiotic – but its possible and having never been in that position don’t know the views someone in it might have. Personally, I didn’t think her big bad wasn’t that bad, but I have been told that I am weird in that kind of regard so who knows.
From the first page, French’s story reminded me of Criminal Minds S9E18 in which the unsub is obsessed with human’s getting rabies. Unfortunately, French’s story is a lot more plausible as well as thrilling. Personally, I had a bad feeling about the bad guy all along (he seemed off), but French did give a lot of foreshadowing towards him – enough that it actually might have been too much. All I know is – between the relationships in the pages, I support Andrew and Letty the most. I would read a second novel just to see more of their relationship get screen time even if the story was awful – which is great for me because the story wasn’t (bad) so I get more romance AND a good story!
Saying that though, French better have a sequel in place. I am super curious on the nature changing idea. I’m getting some serious Zoo vibes, but I feel that’s more of a fantasy-take than French is trying for. Also, if French decides the thriller genre isn’t working for her much anymore, I would highly recommend trying something in the clean romance genre. Her take with the characters reminded me so much of Ali Hazelwood’s, Tessa Bailey’s, and Christina Lauren’s writing styles.
