Hag of the Hills by J.T.T. Ryder: A Book Review
Genre: Historical Fantasy
Ryder writes an interesting novel telling the story of Brennus, a farmer made warrior. Written in the style of an orally told story, the plot of the story was actually pretty good, but the characters were a downfall for the book.
I found all of the characters to be static and didn’t invoke any sense of connection (at least for me). I am not saying that Hag of the Hills was a poor read, but rather I do not believe the style of writing enhanced the story. With orally told stories, I think making dynamic characters is rather difficult as people don’t necessarily focus on the people, but rather the action and plot. Personally, I got annoyed with how static the characters were, though – especially sense there was no connection between me and them at all.
All in all – if you like Celtic stories or find the Iron (or Bronze) Era interesting, you don’t want to miss this book.
