Catching Flies Over Here

River of Ashes by Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor: A Book Review

Genre: Suspense

Pardon my jaw-drop

Weis and Astor writes a phenomenal thriller in their novel, River of Ashes. While the beginning was rather slow, once the middle hit I couldn’t bare to put the book down. All I could wonder was ‘who was going to die’ as there was so much foretelling and hints toward each of the characters. Honestly, it could have been any of them and everything would have still clicked. I am, however, extremely impressed by what Weis and Astor do at the end of the story. It was not only beautiful, it was satisfying. Readers will not see it coming.

Written surrounding the story of two twin sisters, River of Ashes is a tale of not only suspense but also love (both toxic and nontoxic), rape, and revenge. It shows not only the darker side of human nature, but also the complete obliviousness society has toward it.

Honestly, I don’t want to say anything more simply because I am afraid I am going to ruin it if I talk too much. All I can say is this book is a must read and should be put in your cart now if it isn’t already. You can thank me later.

Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):

Psychologists (both in practice or in study), teachers, guidance counselors, those interesting in the human mind – not only would you like this story, you would benefit from it. With the topics Weis dives into there is a lot of room for thought and might help in guiding young people through such things (though we all hope nothing of the sort happens to them).

Those into serial killers and fans of Shirley Jackson – you are not going to want to miss this.
