Numbers Don’t Lie – People do

The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren: A Book Review

Genre: Romance

Best friend duo, Christina Lauren, delivers an epic love story in their novel, The Soulmate Equation, but still offers a tackling array of character development throughout. Focusing on a single mom, Lauren’s MC, Jess, has no time for love – but she desperately wants someone to take away this lonely feeling inside her. In the beauty of her, Jess is the epiphany of what mothers should be – she is selfless, caring, works hard, and gets everything done with the least amount of help from others as possible – but, as Lauren shows, sometimes we need to be a little selfish when it comes to taking care of ourselves.

Offering the idea of soulmates being found through numbers and algorithms, Lauren offers Jess a love interest in River – a man who founded a company who claims to do that exact thing. With a score stating that they are the other’s soulmate, Jess and River look to get to know each other more and see if the algorithm was right – and fall in love. However, what I liked most about the book was the emphasis that was put on how its wasn’t the genes that made a person fall in love – it was what the two did and how they worked together. Just because the numbers make sense doesn’t mean its guaranteed.

The other thing that I really enjoyed about the book was how organic the relationship and the characters were. Jess was a single mom who worried constantly about her kid and didn’t want her to get hurt. River was a man trying to work out of his element but still keep is confidence. The push and pull of all the characters was fantastic. I had to give Lauren a bonus point for the development and authenticity of her characters.

In all, The Soulmate Equation was a joy to read and I can’t wait to get another book in my hands just like it – that or watch a few rom-coms. I’m thinking maybe How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or The Ugly Truth or What’s Your Number?. Honestly though, I think the best part about reading and finishing this novel would be the fact that I get to be with my Diamond Match either watching the rom-coms (my movie night pick) or just sitting in silence as he plays Mexican train on his phone – either one verifies the message of The Soulmate Equation, but I’m just glad even closing the book, the River to my Jess will always be right there.

Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):

Hopeless romantics and fans of rom-coms would love this.
