In a Remote Hotel… there is a killer on the loose

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse: A Book Review

Genre: Thriller, Mystery

You would think that Switzerland would be the most peaceful place in the world, but Sarah Pearse shows that it can be anything but in her novel, The Sanatorium. A stunning thriller that kept my on my toes the whole way through, The Sanatorium dazzles where others dare not follow. Unique to itself, the plot was full of twists, turns, miscalculations, and surprises.

My favorite part was the fact that the who-done-it was no one you would suspect and yet everything made perfect sense. Pearse out did it with the psychological warfare and what makes a serial killer tick. Adding in the element of the past meeting the future was a feat as well. While history might not have been completely repeating itself, there were clear connections to everything leading me to believe that Pearse did some serious homework on the workings of mental disease like psychotic breaks, the minds of serial killers, signatures, and crime literature.

My one complaint is that the relationship between Isaac and Elin had holes. At the beginning it seemed to imply that Isaac was the middle child where as later in the book, Elin is the middle child with Isaac being the older of the two. If this could please be explained to me, I would greatly appreciate it because its weighing on my mind more than it should.

Still, I definitely cannot wait for the sequel, The Retreat, to come out this July. I want to know what that end was all about. And with that, I leave you.

Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):

If you enjoy thrillers and mysteries you would enjoy this book; however, if you are more into cozy mysteries, I would stay away from this story. There is nothing cozy about it.
