The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood: A Book Review
Genre: Romance
Hazelwood quickly became my favorite read with her debut, The Love Hypothesis. While funny and light-hearted, the romance was also full of tough questions, hard topics, and caring insight leading me to fall in love with it almost instantaneously. Throughout the pages, Hazelwood was channeling the rom-com scene hard – and I loved it. Rom-coms are a guilty pleasure of mine and now all I want is for The Love Hypothesis to be made into one so I can start telling people that the book was better (although… thinking about it… if they followed the book semi-closely I think the movie would be just as good).
The thing I loved most about about The Love Hypothesis was how it made fun of being a rom-com – while still being a rom-com and enjoying it whole-heartedly. Other reasons why I enjoyed the story include: talking about the lack of women in science and how this hurts women in the field even if the known actions are only microaggressions; friends assuming things and putting their other friends in awkward positions; the depth that everyone cared for each other; the fact that the bad guy didn’t win; that fact that the MCs were completely oblivious (for some reason I find this hilarious); the fact that their banter reminded me so much of how my fiancé and I interact… and so on and so forth.
I also really like how Hazelwood showed that no one truly knows what they are doing – that sometimes people are just faking it until they make it – while still making the story so much fun. Whether you are a science people or not, this book should definitely be put on your must read list.
Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):
If you love rom-coms – you will want to read this book.
If you don’t like fun, chocolate, or anything enjoyable in the world – you will still want to read this book.
There is one sex scene in this book. While not a raunchy as some romances get, this scene does call for a more mature audience; however, I do feel that because of how it is laid out, this would be a good book to be introduced to went first expressing interest in the romance genre.
Other books like the one reviewed:
I can’t think of any books, but I can think of movies: How to Get Rid of a Guy in 10 Days, The Ugly Truth, and What’s Your Number are all personal rom-com favorites of mine.
