The Slumbering Prince by Carmen Dominique: A Book Review

I said that I was disappointed would be an understatement.
Dominique’s The Slumbering Prince certainly had missed potential leading to it failing any test that could be given. Dominique had a story to tell so the plot, itself, was surrounded by the most potential, however, there was not enough development for the potential to be reached. In fact, it seemed as if the whole story was rushed. There is no background of the characters, no descriptions or anything to make us feel for them. There is no scene setting that gives mood or foreshadowing. There is no twinge of romance or background to it that gives heartache.
With no character development, world-building, or even plot structure, the writing seemed immature. I can only describe it as being like a first draft where the ideas for the story are written down in order to come back and build the story. Unfortunately, I hold authors to high standards and expect something that seems more of a final draft.
Because of these drawbacks, I have to say that Dominique’s editor did not do a full job. Editing could be done on word choice, syntax, plot holes and scenes, and world building – which would give the story more chance at reaching its potential. As it is, however, this story holds little chance at being 40 out of 40. While I can see how Dominique wanted to pay homage towards the Horror genre, more description and cleaner writing is a certain must for such a potential-filled goal.
Who would most enjoy the work and who should stay clear (if necessary):
Geared towards more of younger side of YA literature (give 12 to 15 years of age) for the action scences and cheap thrills, older readers will (most likely) get bored or frustrated with the lack of descriptions and the intense infatuation throughout this story.
