A Queen in Hiding by Sarah Kozloff: A Book Review
Genre: Fantasy
Kozloff writes an enchanting tale in her debut novel, A Queen in Hiding. The starting novel of a four-book series, all of which are now published, Kozloff’s beginning book is mostly background and world-building. I actually await eagerly to have time to read the rest of the series, feeling that the four books are small portions of a bigger epic.
The one problem I have is that, at times, I felt a little lost on the map provided in the first few pages. Of course, I would caution people to pay this no mind as I have a terrible sense of direction in the physical world as well. I also tended to get confused with the names of all the people as well (there was a brief character appendix at the very end). Ignoring those issues, that are all on reader-end, Kozloff’s writing and story-telling draw and weave the magical Nine Realms. Throughout it all, Kozloff drives deep into character wants and ambitions, gives Easter eggs towards different characters interacting, and startles the reader into caring for the world without the reader realizing it.
A Queen in Hiding is a beautiful piece that I highly encourage fans of Fantasy to read.
